About us

A chimney company built around explaining things

Founded in 2006 by George Bogan, who learned the trade as a child working alongside his grandfather. Most homeowners have never seen the inside of their own chimney, and that is the problem we exist to solve.

Our story

Our story

Gold Star Chimney Sweep was founded in 2006 to do chimney work the way we would want it done at our own houses: show up when we said we would, look at everything properly, and explain what we found without dressing it up.

George Bogan started the company in 2006, but the work started a long time before that. He learned it as a child, following his grandfather from job to job, carrying rods, watching how a chimney gets read, picking up the difference between a flue that needs a brush and one that needs a mason.

That is an unusual way into a trade, and it stuck. What George took from those years was not just the mechanics of sweeping a flue; it was watching someone explain to a homeowner exactly what was going on above their fireplace, in words they could follow. He opened Gold Star to do the work at that standard, and to be the company South Florida homeowners call first.

Nearly two decades on, the approach has not changed. We are licensed, insured, and bonded. Every visit produces a written record of the condition of the chimney, and every recommendation comes with the reasoning attached.

Why we do what we do

Problems in a chimney develop where nobody is looking

A chimney is one of the few parts of a house that gets no routine attention at all. Roofs get looked at. Furnaces get serviced. The chimney sits there, exposed to weather on every side including the top, running a fire through its middle a few dozen times a winter, and nobody opens it up.

So the failures accumulate quietly. Creosote thickens on the flue walls a fraction at a time. A hairline crack in the crown lets water in, and freezing weather widens it every year. A clay tile splits during a hot fire. None of that announces itself until the day smoke comes back into the room, or an inspector flags it during a sale, or something worse.

The National Fire Protection Association identifies failure to clean, principally creosote from solid-fuel equipment, as the leading contributing factor in home heating fires. That is a maintenance problem, not a bad luck problem.

We exist so that homeowners can actually know the condition of their chimney and get a clear recommendation when cleaning, maintenance, or repair is warranted. Not a vague warning. Not a scare. A description of what is there, photographs of it, and a straight answer about what to do next.

Our approach

How we work

Inspect before recommending

Nothing gets quoted off a glance from the driveway. The system gets swept and examined, and where the inspection level calls for it, the flue gets scanned with a camera. A recommendation without evidence behind it is not a recommendation.

Say what we found, plainly

Creosote stage, liner condition, crown, flashing, clearances. If a term needs explaining, we explain it. Nobody should have to nod along to a technician they do not understand.

Rank the work honestly

Some things are safety issues. Some can wait a season. Some are cosmetic and always will be. We tell you which is which, and we are comfortable saying a chimney does not need anything.

Protect the house

Covering from the entry to the hearth, drop cloths at the fireplace, and a HEPA-filtered vacuum sealed at the opening before any brush goes in. Soot belongs in the equipment.

Work to the standard

NFPA 211 defines the inspection levels and calls for annual inspection with cleaning and repair as needed. That is the framework we work within, and we will tell you which level applies to your situation and why.

Build the relationship, not the invoice

A chimney is an annual appointment for the life of the house. That only works if you trust the person doing it, which means never manufacturing a problem to fill a slow week.
