Not sure which one you need?
Most homeowners are not, and that is fine. Book a sweep and inspection. It establishes the condition of the chimney and tells you whether anything else on this page applies to you. If you already know what is wrong, go straight to the relevant service.
Chimney Cap Installation
Stainless or copper caps sized to your flue, keeping rain, animals, and debris out of the chimney.
Chimney Cleaning
Creosote and soot removed from the flue, smoke chamber, and firebox, with dust containment inside your home.
Chimney Clog Removal
Nests, debris, and fallen masonry cleared from a blocked flue, then capped so it does not happen again.

What you are seeing, and where it points
Smoke comes into the room
Could be a blockage, a creosote-restricted flue, a damper problem, a poorly formed smoke chamber, or insufficient chimney height. Start with an inspection. The causes look identical from the living room and are cheap to distinguish with a camera.
Water stains near the chimney
Usually a cracked crown, eroded mortar, or lifted flashing. See chimney repair. Sealing before finding the entry point makes it worse.
Animals or scratching in the chimney
Clog removal to clear it, then a cap so it does not recur.
Pieces of clay tile in the firebox
The flue liner is failing. See chimney lining, and do not burn until it has been assessed.
New furnace, stove, or insert going in
The flue is probably now the wrong size. Relining is the standard step at installation.
Cracked firebrick or a stuck damper
Fireplace repair. Both are routine and both get worse if you keep burning.
Nothing wrong, it has just been a year
A sweep and inspection. That is the annual maintenance appointment, and it is the one that keeps the rest of this list from happening.
